Hospital Discharge Equipment | Same-Day Delivery Across Metro Vancouver

Metro Vancouver & the Fraser Valley

Equipment for a hospital discharge, delivered the same day

Most families get about 48 hours’ notice. We hold beds, commodes, walkers and wheelchairs on the showroom floor, deliver across the Lower Mainland, and set everything up in the room before we leave. Someone answers the phone at any hour.

Three things worth doing before delivery day

Measure the narrowest doorway on the route, and the floor space where the equipment will sit. Almost every failed delivery we see comes down to a measurement nobody took — a bed that will not turn the corner at the top of the stairs, a wheelchair an inch too wide for a hallway. Two minutes with a tape measure.

Decide where the bed is going. If stairs have become the problem, a bed on the main floor solves more than any other single item. It is less disruptive than it sounds, and it removes the daily risk rather than managing around it.

Do not buy anything if you are applying for funding. Ministry funding in BC must be approved before purchase — buying first and claiming afterwards generally does not work. Renting is not a purchase, so it covers the immediate need without jeopardising an application.

Discharge cases can be expedited

When equipment is needed before someone can leave hospital, the Ministry’s Health Assistance Branch is meant to be notified as early as possible, and approvals can move in days rather than weeks. Say explicitly that a discharge is involved — to the hospital social worker and to your Ministry office. Our step-by-step funding guide covers the whole process.

What happens when you call

You do not need to know the right words for any of this.

1

Tell us the situation

Read us the discharge list, or just describe what happened. We will ask about doorways, stairs and who is helping at home.

2

We say what you need

Including what you do not. Plenty of lists include items that end up unused.

3

Same-day delivery

Free across Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. Tell us the discharge time.

4

We set it up

Assembled in the room and explained to whoever is providing care before we leave.

Questions families ask us

The discharge is tomorrow. Can you really deliver in time?

Often, yes — if you call early enough in the day and the equipment is in stock. Beds, commodes, walkers, wheelchairs and bathroom safety equipment are what we hold on the floor for exactly this reason. Call 604-240-2450 and tell us the discharge time. We will tell you honestly whether we can make it rather than promising and failing.

I have a list from the occupational therapist but I do not understand it.

Read it to us over the phone, or photograph it and send it through our contact form. Hospital lists use clinical terms and rarely mention sizes, brands or whether renting is an option. We will translate it into specific items and tell you what each one is actually for.

Should we rent or buy?

For a defined recovery — after surgery, or while therapy is still changing things — renting is almost always better. Returning a bed is far easier than reselling one, and renting does not jeopardise a pending funding application. Buy when the need is clearly long-term, roughly a year or more.

What if we get it home and it is wrong?

Call us. If something does not fit the room or does not suit the person using it, we would rather sort it out than have it sit unused in a hallway. That is also the argument for renting first when a recovery is short.

Is any of this covered by MSP?

MSP generally does not fund home medical equipment. Funding runs through Ministry programs such as BCEA or PWD, extended health plans, ICBC or WorkSafeBC depending on the circumstances. Our funding guide walks through which applies and how to apply.

Are you connected to any hospital or health authority?

No. Must Medical is an independent retailer. We are not affiliated with Fraser Health, Vancouver Coastal Health, or any hospital, and you do not need a referral from them to buy or rent from us.

Must Medical Equipment is an independent retailer of home medical equipment. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any hospital or health authority. Hospital names are used only to describe the areas and situations we serve. Nothing on this page is medical advice — follow the guidance of your care team.

Tell us the discharge date

Even if it is late, even if you are not sure yet what you need. A five-minute call now is easier than sorting it out on the day.
