What discharge lists usually ask for
If yours does not match any of these, call and describe it.
That changes the equipment conversation. When a parent or grandparent is coming home to a house where family will be providing the care, the question is not only what the patient needs — it is what makes the caring sustainable for everyone else. Bed height adjustment, a commode beside the bed and a transfer aid usually matter more than anything on the list, because they are what stop a family carer injuring their own back in the first month.
Two things Richmond families run into
Both are practical rather than medical.
Condos and townhouses
Much of Richmond is apartment, condo and townhouse housing, and buildings have their own constraints.
- Book the service elevator with your strata — many require notice
- Measure the corridor turn outside your door, not just the door
- In townhouses, the bedroom is usually upstairs — consider a main-floor bed
- Beds come apart into sections, which helps a great deal
When family is providing the care
Equipment that protects the carer is usually the best money spent.
- Full-height bed adjustment, so nobody bends to lift
- A commode beside the bed removes the night-time walk
- Slide sheets and transfer boards for partial-weight transfers
- We show whoever is caring how to use everything before we leave
Ministry funding in BC has to be approved before you purchase. Renting is not a purchase, so it covers the immediate need without jeopardising an application. Our step-by-step funding guide explains the process.
What happens when you call
Tell us the situation
Read us the discharge list or describe what happened. We will ask about doorways, elevators and who is helping.
We say what you need
Including what you do not. Renting is usually better for a short recovery.
Same-day delivery
Free across Richmond, Steveston and the Lower Mainland.
We set it up
Assembled in the room and explained to whoever is providing care.
Questions families ask us
The discharge is tomorrow. Can you deliver in time?
Often, yes — if you call early in the day and the item is in stock. Beds, commodes, walkers and wheelchairs are held on our showroom floor for exactly this reason. Call 604-240-2450 and tell us the discharge time; we will say honestly whether we can make it.
Will a hospital bed fit in a condo?
Usually, but check three measurements: your own doorway, the corridor turn outside it, and the service elevator. Beds come apart into sections which helps. Book the elevator with your strata in advance — many buildings require notice and it is the most common cause of a failed delivery.
The bedroom is upstairs in our townhouse. What do people do?
Most often, put the bed on the main floor. It is less disruptive than it sounds and it solves the stairs problem completely rather than managing around it. You need roughly 88 by 36 inches of floor space, standing room on one side, and a power outlet within reach.
I have a list from the occupational therapist but do not understand it.
Read it to us over the phone or send a photo through our contact form. Hospital lists use clinical terms and rarely mention sizes or whether renting is an option. We will translate it into specific items and tell you what each is for.
Is any of this covered?
MSP generally does not fund home medical equipment. Funding runs through Ministry programs such as BCEA or PWD, extended health plans, ICBC or WorkSafeBC. Ministry funding requires approval before purchase — see our funding guide.
