Truform compression stockings and socks
Truform is the compression hosiery line of Airway Surgical Appliances. Every garment is knit to a measured pressure gradient — tightest at the ankle, easing up the leg — and checked at four points on a below-knee stocking, six on a thigh-high or pantyhose. We stock the common sizes in Surrey and fit them properly, delivering across Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, Delta, Langley, White Rock and Abbotsford.

Compression levels, and what each is for
The mmHg number is the pressure at the ankle. It is the single most important thing to get right — more is not better.
- 8-15 mmHgMild. Tired, aching legs and slight ankle swelling after a long day standing. Available without a prescription and safe for most people.
- 15-20 mmHgModerate. Minor varicose veins, swelling in pregnancy, long flights and long shifts on your feet. The most commonly bought level.
- 18 mmHgAnti-embolism. A different design entirely, for someone reclining or confined to bed after surgery — not for walking around in.
- 20-30 mmHgFirm. Moderate varicosities and edema, after sclerotherapy or vein surgery, and to help prevent venous ulcers returning. Usually clinician-recommended.
- 30-40 mmHgExtra firm. Severe varicosities, lymphoedema, chronic venous insufficiency and ulcer management. Should be specified by a physician.
Firm compression can be harmful with peripheral arterial disease, and needs care with diabetes, neuropathy or heart failure. If you have circulation problems in the arteries rather than the veins, or any numbness in the feet, speak to your doctor before wearing anything above the mild range. We are happy to fit and sell you the level a clinician has recommended — we are not the right people to diagnose which one that should be.

Getting the size right
Compression hosiery is sized from measurements, not shoe size. Three habits make the difference.
Measure first thing in the morning
Legs swell through the day. Measure as soon as possible after waking, against bare skin, with the foot flat and the leg at a right angle. A stocking sized to an afternoon leg will be too loose by the next morning, which is when it matters most.
Ankle and calf, then length
The ankle circumference is the primary number, the calf is second, and the heel-to-knee length decides regular or short. Thigh highs add a thigh measurement, pantyhose use height and weight. Pull the tape snug without denting the skin.
Buy two pairs, not one
They need washing after each wear and lose elasticity over roughly three to six months of daily use. One pair means either wearing them dirty or not wearing them on wash day. Two pairs alternated last longer than two pairs used one after the other.

Open toe or closed toe?
Closed toe is the default and most people prefer it. Choose open toe if the toes need to be inspected (common after surgery or with diabetes), if the feet are painful or arthritic, if you want to wear them with sandals, or if the foot size sits awkwardly between two stocking sizes — open toe accommodates a wider range of foot lengths.
Knee high or thigh high?
Knee highs handle most swelling, because the majority of venous return problems are below the knee, and they are far easier to put on. Thigh highs and pantyhose are for swelling that extends above the knee, or where a clinician has specified them. A thigh high that rolls down is worse than a knee high that fits.
How do I get them on? Mine are impossible.
This is the single most common reason people give up on compression. The technique matters more than strength: turn the stocking inside out to the heel, work the heel into place first, then roll rather than pull up the leg. If that is still difficult, the donning aids above genuinely work — the Slip Sock (0750) for open toe and the applicator frame (0752) are inexpensive and solve it for most people. How often should they be replaced?
Every three to six months with daily wear. The elastic fatigues long before the fabric looks worn, so a stocking that still looks fine may have stopped delivering its rated pressure. If they have become noticeably easy to put on, they are finished.
How do I wash them?
Hand wash or gentle cycle in a mesh bag, mild detergent, and air dry away from direct heat. No fabric softener, no bleach, no dryer — heat and softeners destroy the elastane that produces the compression.
Will extended health cover compression stockings?
Frequently, yes — this is one of the better-covered categories, usually with a prescription naming the compression class, and often with an annual limit of two to four pairs. MSP does not cover them. We provide itemised receipts with the model number and mmHg, which is what insurers ask for.
Can I just buy the strongest ones to be safe?
No — that is the wrong instinct with compression. Higher pressure is not a stronger version of the same thing; it is a different clinical tool with real contraindications, and it is also much harder to put on and less likely to be worn. If nobody has specified a level for you, 15-20 mmHg is where most people should start.
Come in and be measured
Bring the prescription if you have one, or just the swollen leg if you do not. Measuring takes five minutes and is the difference between a stocking you wear daily and one that lives in a drawer.
