Lift chairs are one of the few pieces of home medical equipment people buy without ever sitting in one first. That's usually a mistake — and it's the main reason we suggest people think carefully about renting first.
The case for renting first
Fit is not universal. A lift chair that's too tall leaves feet dangling; too deep and the user slides forward instead of being supported. Seat width, seat depth and back height all need to match the person, not the average person.
Needs change. Someone recovering from a hip replacement may need a lift chair for eight weeks. Someone with a progressive condition may need different features in a year than they need today.
Preferences are real. Two-position, three-position and infinite-position recline all feel quite different. So does heat and massage — some people love it, some never turn it on.
The case for buying
Long-term or permanent need. If a lift chair is going to be part of daily life indefinitely, purchase is almost always more economical.
It becomes the primary chair. For many users, the lift chair is where they spend most of the day. At that point comfort, upholstery and fit matter the way a sofa would.
Financing changes the math. A purchase price that seems out of reach as a lump sum can be manageable monthly with 0% financing.
What to check before you commit either way
- Weight capacity — check the actual rating, not an assumption
- User height — most manufacturers publish recommended height ranges per model
- Doorway and room clearance — including how far the chair needs to sit from the wall when fully reclined
- Power requirements — and whether there's a battery backup for power outages
- Delivery and setup — these chairs are heavy and awkward; this shouldn't be a DIY job
