Longer admissions need more than a walker
Royal Columbian handles the region's most serious cases — major trauma, cardiac surgery, stroke and neurosurgery. That shapes what comes home afterwards. A discharge from here more often involves someone who has been in hospital for weeks, has lost significant strength, and needs equipment that a short-stay patient never would.
In practice that means the conversation is usually about transfers rather than walking aids. Can this person get from bed to chair? Can whoever is caring for them manage it without injuring themselves? Those questions decide almost everything else.

Getting equipment into an apartment
New Westminster and Coquitlam have a great deal of apartment and condo housing, and buildings have rules.

- Measure the elevator door and the corridor turn, not just your own door
- A bed comes apart into sections, but a lift often does not

Questions families ask us
The discharge is tomorrow. Can you deliver in time?
Often, yes — if you call early in the day and the item is in stock. Beds, commodes, walkers and wheelchairs are held on our showroom floor. Patient lifts are lower-volume, so call as early as you can for those. We will tell you honestly whether we can make it.
Will a hospital bed fit in an apartment?
Usually, but check three measurements: your own doorway, the corridor turn outside it, and the service elevator. Beds come apart into sections which helps a great deal. Book the elevator with your strata in advance — many buildings require notice and it is the most common cause of a failed delivery.
How do I know whether we need a full patient lift?
The rough test is whether the person can bear any weight through their legs during a transfer. If they can partially, a sit-to-stand aid or transfer board may be enough. If they cannot at all, or if the caregiver is straining, you need a floor lift. Describe a normal transfer over the phone and we will tell you which applies.
What is a pressure-relief mattress and do we need one?
It redistributes pressure to reduce the risk of pressure injuries in someone who cannot reposition themselves. If the person will be spending most of the day in bed, it is usually recommended alongside the bed rather than as an afterthought. Ask the discharge team whether it is on the list.
Is any of this covered?
MSP generally does not fund home medical equipment. Funding runs through Ministry programs such as BCEA or PWD, extended health plans, ICBC or WorkSafeBC. Ministry funding requires approval before purchase — see our funding guide.
